I recently read a proposed “list of keywords” in an SEO plan for an agent. It was about forty search terms long and nine out of ten were completely valueless had no competitors in the business because they were terms only an imbibcel few people would type into Google.
You can determine popularity and competition for any term right away by using the free keyword tool at the Google website for that. Have a look: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Examine the comparison of two terms that would seem synonomous, especially to someone accustomed to the industry, yet one was searched more than the other by a 37/1 ratio in November, 2009. Despite the vast difference in the use of the two terms, advertiser competition was closely similar for the lesser term. Are all real estate agents checking this tool? If you’re going to have to fight the same competition for a high ranking, you may as well tough it out for the most searched term, right? It doesn’t take much of an SEO expert to make that choice.
