Like a distant wildfire, the sun sets over Lanai. A couple walks along the beach barely noticing their surroundings. After a few days, the surroundings almost feel normal- like there was never anywhere else. Maui pulls you into its spell that way. Each wave in its gentle crash carries you another small distance- away from “home” and into a timeless procession. Sunrise, sunset. Moonrise, moonset. Day, night and the ceaseless sounds of waves, wind, showers and never-ending warmth of the tropics.

The exhaling starts before the whale reaches the surface of the blue Maui waters. Humpback whale watch January, 2006.

January, 2006 captured with my first Canon Rebel (300D) and a 70-200 off brand lens. The whales were surfacing repeatedly right beside our boat looking like living submarines.

That’s why I love this place so much and have so many pictures of it. Maui is perfection in the winter. Nights in the upper 60s and days in the low to mid 80s. Rain showers pepper the landscape and ocean and create rainbows at all times of the day. More of my Maui pictures are at my new (and in progress) Maui album.
This photo is much closer to the golden ratio than the loosely applied rule of thirds. I think it looks much better than the one posted earlier.
