Steve recently highlighted an online tool at http://keywordcompetitor.com. I tried this tool and first thought it seemed a little clumsy but over a few days use, it has proved to be invaluable. It gathers real time data. Steve and I are both left wondering how, since Google doesn’t like automated hits on its servers. They must have a wide array of machines performing the queries, maybe they pay participants to allow their software to run in low use cycles like SETI? At any rate, the site gathers keyword data on competitors or yourself. There is a non-expiring trial version that would probably be more than enough for a small business doing DIY keyword research. The tool even reports back to you in email when its queries are complete.
The trial version allows you to compare yourself and one competitor and it sends updates for that comparison on a regular basis. The paid version allows unlimited lineups to compare, but you can run as many individual reports on competitors and your own domains, one-at-a-time, as you like.

I’m off now to use this tool for an actual client in Florida. It’s always great to have more data to report to a client, especially real-time data! Being an Orange County SEO expert means having every resource possible at your disposal.
