Taken with an Olympus Stylus 1.3MP point and shoot digital camera. I’d love to go back and try out the Canon 550D or 40D now.

Like a Living Submarine – Maui Humpback Whale Surfaces

March 16th, 2010 davekeys No comments

January, 2006 captured with my first Canon Rebel (300D) and a 70-200 off brand lens. The whales were surfacing repeatedly right beside our boat looking like living submarines.

Keeping It Casual

January 15th, 2010 davekeys No comments

I place so much emphasis on optimization of websites and blogs that there needs to be at least one place that’s free-form for just posting when and what I feel like. This is that place. Step on in!

Photo taken in Florence, April, 2001.

This is Maui… in January

January 2nd, 2010 davekeys No comments

That’s why I love this place so much and have so many pictures of it. Maui is perfection in the winter. Nights in the upper 60s and days in the low to mid 80s. Rain showers pepper the landscape and ocean and create rainbows at all times of the day. More of my Maui pictures are at my new (and in progress) Maui album.

I Felt Like A National Geographic Photographer

December 28th, 2009 davekeys No comments

Not exactly water buffalo, but these cows grazing in a canal connecting a minor lake to Lake Kissimmee in Florida were a new sight for this photographer. I caught all the wildlife I could on a boat ride with my brother who lives on the lake.

The cows seem completely oblivious to all the boat traffic in the waterway. They also seemed oblivious to the alligators- we saw some four-foot ones. I guess the cows were just to large to be threatened by the gators.

Addie and Grandma In Sunlight Through The Window

December 28th, 2009 davekeys No comments

Addie and Grandma spend some time playing with odds and ends on the floor after the Christmas gifts are all opened. The light is streaming through the blinds and providing my favorite kind of lighting for photography, angled sunlight. In So Cal, there’s a lot of opportunity for that kind of light in winter.

Not Thrilled With My Blackberry

December 24th, 2009 davekeys No comments

I was not thrilled with the performance of my Blackberry today. This is a blackberry by proxy- one that belongs to my brother who upgraded to a Droid. I’m beginning to understand why. A scenario unfolded today. One that has repeated occurrences but today’s was most aggravating. I went on one of those emergency holiday runs, but something was amiss in the communication. A priority was not set correctly and my wife called me to let me know she needed something first, and she needed it fast. Unfortunately, my Blackberry only reported the missed call and did not ring. Again. Repeat. When I finally took it out to make a call, I saw that I had “missed a call” but the now all-too-familiar hourglass was turning over and over- I could not access any feature, including placing a call or even getting into phone mode. The sole remedy, which I’m learning is common among users, was to pull and replace the battery. Meanwhile an unhappy extra run by my harried and overworked wife resulted and I settled the score.

I returned to my LG VX9100. I can check my Gmail on it and everything else can wait until I get on my MacBook Pro.

The Blackberry has been forwarded to a reliable phone.

Before and After – Manipulating Color In Low Light

October 12th, 2009 davekeys No comments

Before and After

Before: Photo taken at 1/80 shutter speed, f2.8, ISO 1600, no flash. This guarantees too much red, unless that’s what you’re after.

After: Photoshop layer with high pass, vivid light masked with highlighted areas of candles and flowers. Second layer with color removed and mask erased on candles and highlighted flowers. Finally, a layer below with color reduced to around 30%.

Update on Lowlights before and After for Hair

For some reason, this post has had a lot of visitors searching for lowlights before and after for hair coloring. Probably the best example of hair lowlights before and after is on Adrian Well‘s website. My wife and the girls in our family have done this technique from time to time with nice results but none of them stick with it all that long- they end up wanting a change, or deciding not to continue the endless cycle of maintaining the style as their hair grows out. It probably works best when used at more subtle levels or on lighter hair colors. This hair technique is totally out of vogue for all guys except those badly stuck back in the 1990s, now the stone-age in hair style measures of time.
