I spent around an hour or so preparing a guided tour in Google Earth, marking places we would visit. One of my points was to stress how large the Earth actually is. Most of the students have never been outside Southern CA and nearly all of them had never been beyond Mexico or Arizona. I made several detours and stops along the way including the island of Maui and the Grand Canyon.

I showed them the caldera of Haleakala in Hawaii and informed them that Manhattan would fit inside of the crater. They began to get the idea later when we virtually toured Manhattan and saw the Statue of Liberty and the WTC site. I reminded them that the entirety of what they saw in Manhattan would fit in that volcano caldera they saw earlier. Finally, we made our virtual way toward Egypt where we considered the impact of the Nile River valley and its impact on civilization throughout history.
