From Army Recruiter to Effective Copywriter

Once, I was a recruiter in the US Army. So what does that have to do with effective copywriting?


Military Sales Training

Back in 1988, I was assigned the role of serving as an army recruiter and received sales training from one of the world's top sales trainers. I had no idea I would be any good at sales but that US Army recruiter sales training opened up a new world of sales communication and marketing. I ended up graduating from that intensive training at the top of my class, receiving a certificate and the whole deal complete with a letter in my official file. That’s the way the military does things.

I’m sure you can easily guess that an enlistment into the Army isn’t exactly on the bucket list of most high school age young people, yet, selling that very thing as a product to 17 to 20 something generation X prospects was my real-world challenge.

Because despite the fact that they wanted almost anything other than to hear from me, the dreaded Army recruiter on a cold call, as a soldier, my military business objective was about numbers.
